A Majority of the AIC Opposes Overture 15

By Tim LeCroy

Many proponents of Item one to amend the BCO (2022’s Overture 15) claim that the amendment is in keeping with the AIC report on Human Sexuality, or even that it is helping to codify that report. I have argued directly against such a notion on this website. But now we have an even stronger reason to think that this amendment is a direct contradiction of the AIC report. As of today, Saturday, February 4, 2023, a majority of the Ad interim Committee has publicly declared against this amendment. Pastor Tim Keller tweeted out the following earlier this afternoon:

@timkellernyc: Some insider PCA Baseball. This is a good, short set of reasons why Overture 15 now being considered by our Presbyteries is unwise and would best be defeated. https://www.semperref.org/articles/three-brief-comments-on-overture-15

Here at Semper Ref, we already have published articles from three members of the committee arguing why they believe the amendment should be voted down: RE Kyle Keating, TE Jim Weidenaar, and RE Jim Pocta.

With Pastor Keller’s declaration this now means that a majority of the members have publicly stated that this should be voted down because it does not reflect the theology in their report. Of the remaining three members of the committee, Dr. Bryan Chapell cannot comment because of his status as Stated Clerk of the General Assembly, and another, Dr. Derek Halverson, is unlikely to comment publicly due to his status as President of Covenant College.

A majority of the committee that the General Assembly lauded as producing a biblically faithful report has now said we should vote against Item one (Overture 15).

It seems wise that those remaining presbyteries yet to vote should vote this amendment down.

Vote no on Item one.
