A 50th General Assembly Voting Guide

by Tim LeCroy, June 6, 2023

I’ve been asked by several folks to produce a voting guide for this year’s General Assembly. I have researched the overtures, incorporated the recommendations and advice of the permanent committees from their reports, and gotten input from a few friends knowledgeable about the Assembly’s business. I offer this publicly as my personal opinion purely for information, with no intention to bind anyone’s conscience, in the spirit of openness and transparency. Some may find reading it as a helpful way to process the Assembly’s business. Since I was the chairman of the GA’s AIC on Abuse (DASA) my opinion on those matters may bear more weight.

My sincere hope is that we will have a spirit of unity and consensus next week. We will never agree on everything, in fact, we will have sharp disagreements at times. But we are still called to be in one Church. I hope that the PCA will continue to be a church for those who can disagree. At the Review of Presbytery Records last week we were debating an exception of substance on a candidate stating a difference to LC 109 on images. I stood up and addressed the body saying, “There are many in the PCA who have passionate opinions on this issue, but the PCA is a denomination where those who express this difference have been accepted as ministers in good standing. The fundamental question here is a philosophical one: do we want the PCA to continue to be a denomination where those who hold this difference and those we are opposed to it can co-exist? I vote that we remain that way. We must decide what we want to be.”

Last year we came to a broad consensus on two overtures addressing concerns about the issue of homosexuality. This demonstrates that meaningful compromise is still possible in the PCA. I hope that we are able to continue that trajectory next week, continuing to be the continuing mainline Presbyterian denomination that we were founded to be.

Here is my guide. Feel free to share broadly.
